Interstitial lung disease is the broader term for various lung disorders caused by inflammation or scarring of the lung tissue. The scarring (pulmonary fibrosis), causes the lung tissues to harden and become inflexible, rendering the lungs unable to expand to their normal size. If the condition remains is not reversed, it causes difficulties in breathing and hampers blood flow and the accompanying reduction of oxygen.
There are many forms of Interstitial Lung Disease caused by various factors, and which play out in different ways:
Interstitial Pneumonia: This disorder is caused by infection of the interstitium of lungs by fungi, bacteria or viruses. The most common culprit is a bacterium called mycoplasma pneumonia
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: The cause of this lung disorder is unknown, but it is a chronic type pulmonary fibrosis (scarring) of the interstitium
Hypersensitive Pneumonitis: This condition is caused by excessive inhalation of mold, dust or other environmental irritants
Non-Specific Interstitial Pneumonitis: These lung conditions are the result of autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma
Acute Interstitial Pneumonitis: This is a sudden and intense advancement of any the above conditions, and which generally requires life-support
Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia: This is another interstitial lung disorder with no known cause but there is no presence of infection
Desquamative Interstitial Pneumonitis: This condition is partly caused by smoking
Asbestosis: This condition is eponymously named as it is caused due to extensive exposure to asbestos
Sarcoidosis: This interstitial lung disorder causes the lymph nodes to become swollen. Often, other parts of the body like the eyes, heart, skin and nerve tissues are also affected.

There are two main symptoms of interstitial lung disease and these are chronic dry cough and increased shortness of breath.
